PhD – Rare Metal Mineralization Associated with the Strange Lake Deposit, Northern Canada – Research Affiliate Program

This PhD Research Affiliate Program (RAP) bursary offers students the opportunity to explore rare metal ore systems at Torngat Metals’ Strange Lake deposit in northern Quebec and Labrador. The study will focus on the Mesoproterozoic Strange Lake pluton, which is enriched in rare earth elements (REE), Zr, and Nb, and aims to address knowledge gaps in rare metal mineralization processes.

Required Education:

  • Enrollment in or eligibility for a Ph.D. program at the University of Ottawa specializing in igneous petrology and geochemistry.
  • Graduated with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Earth Science, Geology, or a related field.

Required Experience:

  • Participation in fieldwork or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in identifying and describing rocks and minerals.
  • Expertise in optical microscopy, petrographic analysis, and mineral identification techniques.
  • Experience in conducting geochemical analyses (e.g., SEM, EMPA, LA-ICP-MS, XRF, XRD).
  • Experience writing scientific reports or technical documents for publication.

Skills:

  • Strong foundation in igneous petrology and geochemistry.
  • Familiarity with ore-forming processes, including magmatic and hydrothermal mineralization.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Salary Package:
Scholarship of $28,000/year divided into 3 equal installments annually.
