The Research Affiliate Program (RAP) position offers a student the opportunity to lead data collection on a project investigating the interaction of problematic pulse crop diseases with common and problematic weeds. The role involves collecting leguminous weeds from fields, determining if they are infected with plant pathogens, conducting greenhouse studies, and analyzing whether these pathogens can complete their life cycle on weeds. The student will be guided by co-supervisors and a supervisory committee. The student will work primarily at the University of Alberta and spend some time at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lacombe, Alberta.
Required Education:
- Enrolled or will be enrolled in a Master’s program in Plant Science, Agriculture, or a related specialty at the University of Alberta by September 2025
- Alternatively, completing a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and enrolled in a Master’s program by September 2025
Required Experience:
- Experience in microbiology research, including culturing microorganisms and using sterile techniques
- Experience in molecular biology techniques, such as nucleic acid extractions and PCR assays
- Experience conducting research related to plants or agriculture
- Experience presenting or summarizing data via presentations, reports, or posters
Skills:
- Knowledge of agricultural crops grown in the Prairies
- Knowledge of disease management practices
- Knowledge of statistical tools for research and data analysis
- Knowledge of common weed species
- Ability to perform lab work with minimal supervision
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to use computer software for data management and statistical analysis
Salary Package:
- Master’s level: $25.17 to $31.69 per hour
- Undergraduate level: $18.84 to $28.30 per hour
